Members of the Eye in the Wasteland - from Untamed Highway Issue 3
Untamed Highway is THE underground, self published Comic Book that scratches the Underbelly of Vanished
American Pop Culture.  It is a Road Trip Freak Show Slapstick Mystery Cartoon Noir with Tiki Bars; Kreeps; Kustom
Kulture; Cool Cars; a poisonous Drinking Bird and an uptight Sock Puppet; Freaks; Exotica; Film Noir; a secret
Shriner like Society; Mini-Shriner Cars; Hypnotism; a guy in a Gorilla Mask; Tikis; Monsters; Roadside Attractions;
Pin-Up Babes; Beatniks; Horror Show and Kiddie Show Hosts; Googie Architecture; Silent Movies; Coffee Shops
and Drive-In Diners; and Tor!  Set in a mid-century netherworld, this comic presents the story of Sydney Drake.
Sydney is an average guy (or perhaps a bit below average), who finds himself doing the bidding of a Secret Society
that is obsessed with Americana and Mom and Pop roadside attractions.
Untamed Highway's, Secret Order of the Eye in the Wasteland, is a Fraternal Society that researches and helps all the
roadside attractions that dotted the countryside up until the late 1970's.  Dinosaur Parks, Alligator Farms, Freak
Shows, Storybook Lands, Mystery Spots, Dime Museums, etc.  You can still find some of these places, but by and
large they’ve been trampled under the feet of the extreme, in-yer-face, state of the art, mega amusement parks.  The
Eye in the Wasteland saw this coming many years ago.  They fought a losing battle to preserve the quaint, strange,
individualistic establishments that were run by average people who were just trying to make a living, and express
their personal obsessions.
Untamed Highway explores the sense of mystery and wonder to be found in these kinds of places, and the oh-so-
different America that fostered them.  Along with the roadside attractions, future issues of
Untamed Highway will take
a look at other forgotten artifacts of our past… fascinating googie architecture, spookshows, b-movies, kiddie tv
shows, Atomic and Space Age Culture, old cars and hot rods, etc., etc.  Despite a strong sense of sentiment over the
subject matter,
Untamed Highway has an often wicked sense of humor, and diabolical characters to carry the story
along.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The
first issue of our comic tells the story of how Syd gets in over his head in this unraveling mystery.  Along the way
he deforms the owner of a tiki bar, drools over a sexy ex, and almost gets killed by his arch enemy Bananas Barofski,
who is permanently trapped inside a gorilla mask.  And that’s only the first half of the comic.
The
second issue takes you on the trip with Syd as he searches for the elusive alligator boy Adam. He meets up with
an old silent movie actor, and together they travel along the Highway, eventually stopping at a Curiosity Shop filled
with Mummys, Tikis, Shrunken Heads, Enlarged Heads, Masks, Mugs, Big Eyed Art, Pickled Punks, and other Odd
Freaks and Knick Knacks from collections long past.  All the while Syd is being followed by the Secret Society who
got him into this mess in the first place, The Eye in The Wasteland.  And he meets up with Barofski again!
The
 third issue of Untamed Highway continues the ongoing saga of hard-lucked Sydney Drake. Issue 3 picks up
with Syd's less than triumphant return to the Eye in The Wasteland headquarters.  During his disoriented journey
through the barren desert to find Adam the Alligator Boy, Syd has hallucinatory conversations, and meets a
dangerously savage Sideshow Freak. While in the second half of the comic, he encounters a sharp-tongued Horror
Show Host , and some cool Coffee House Beatniks.  The murder of someone very, very special to him, draws him
even deeper into the mystery.  And lures him further into the Eye in The Wasteland Society.
Untamed Highway is highly influenced by classic comics and cartoons, and is passionately inspired by many near-
forgotten works of art…Capp’s Li’l Abner, Segar’s Popeye, Gould's Dick Tracy, Barks' duck comics, Wolverton,
Kurtzman, Wood, Elder, Davis, Cole’s Plastic Man, pre-1970 Archie comics, EC comics, Eisner, John Stanley, and the
list goes on.  Many contemporary creators and artists added influence, such as Dan Clowes, Crumb, Richard Sala,
Rick Altergott's Doofus, Todd Schorr, Shagg, Big Daddy Roth, John K and Spumco.
Untamed Highway is created, written and inked by Noah Snodgrass, an upstanding young fellow with an unbridled
passion for comics.  This passion comes across in his work, which is rich with story, and meticulously hand -
illustrated.  No computers here folks!
